A casting mold for large flat boulders

Anyone building landscape sooner or later comes up against the fact that finished rock pieces never fit exactly where they are needed. A casting mold gets around this problem: as many plaster castings come out of it as a modeler pours, and each one can be trimmed, bent or broken before it hardens. The shape of this mold matches the large flat boulders that come to the surface in road cuttings, on the slopes of embankments and along ditches.

How the mold is worked with

• Wet the inside first and the casting will then come free more easily.
• Mix the plaster to the consistency of cream and pour it into the mold.
• Let it harden only to a firm, not a dry state.
• Lay the damp casting onto the terrain and press it, so that it adheres.

The material and the dimensions

The mold is flexible, so a casting can be popped out by bending the walls, and it is intended for repeated use. The area is 12.7 x 17.7 cm, which corresponds to five by seven inches. A whole rock massif can be built on one layout from a single mold, because the castings are turned and broken alternately, so that the repeating shape does not give itself away.

For painting, liquid scenic pigments suit, as they soak into damp plaster and bring out the texture. It is practical to pour several castings at once and to paint them only after they are seated on the terrain, so that the transitions between the stones and the soil are not visible. Plaster and coloring agents are not part of the delivery, and the mold is sold on its own.
