A fine scatter made of several shades of gray, a 945 cm³ shaker. A blended mixture for the smallest scales and fine surfaces.

Real track ballast does not have one color. Stone from different deliveries is mixed in it, lighter and darker, and the eye recognizes this uneven surface at once. A blended mixture therefore looks a degree livelier than a plain single-color scatter, and that without a single stroke of a brush.
Small grains behave almost like dust, and that has two sides. They spread easily into a perfectly flat surface, but they fly apart just as easily when you wave a hand over them. Work therefore in a quiet space without a draft and hold the container low above the surface.
Do the wetting with a sprayer giving a very fine mist. A strong stream of water would wash the fine material away before it had time to soak through, and bare little paths would be left in the surface.
On small models it pays off to combine: the blend into the ballast, a single-color fine material onto the roads around. The difference between the two surfaces is unobtrusive, but it gives a scene depth, because the surroundings are set apart from the track without a sharp boundary.
The fine grade also serves for later corrections to a finished scene. A pinch poured into a hollow that sank once the glue had dried, and a single drop of the thinned mixture, will level the spot without your having to spread the whole stretch again.
