It joins two things a modeler keeps side by side on the bench: a solid sanding plate and sandpaper. The plate keeps the surface flat, so that in leveling seams and the remains of parts you do not wear the surrounding surface into a wave, as easily happens with paper held in the fingers. The grade is coarse, that is meant for the first stage of the work, when material has to be removed. The red color sets this grit apart from the finer grades in the same range.
An abrasive removes material rather than cutting it. Guide the tool in long strokes in one direction and press only lightly; a coarse grit takes off quickly and under heavy pressure you easily go past the shape you wanted to keep. Work from coarse to fine: level a seam or the remains of a part with the coarse grade and then smooth the transition with a finer grit, or scratches will stay in the plastic and show up only under the paint. Knock the clogged paper out or clean it with a soft brush as you go, as a clogged surface sands worse and smears. Wash and degrease the sanded area before painting, so that no dust is left on it.
For builders of plastic kits who need to level fuselage seams, square up mating surfaces or take off the remains of broken-out parts. It is also useful when working resin parts, where a surface has to be squared up before gluing.
