A gloss coat is an intermediate step in the build that decides the outcome of two further stages. On a smooth gloss a decal adheres over its whole area and no silvering from trapped air stays under it; the same surface also separates the paintwork from enamel and oil products, which can be blended and wiped over it without the risk that the builder will rub through to the base.
This product is built for higher mechanical durability than is usually expected of gloss varnishes. It dries quickly, it can be worked over after an hour and it reaches full strength within twenty-four hours. It is thinned with water or with the acrylic thinner of the same brand and is applied in thin passes, with time to flash off in between.
It takes plastic, resin, metal and prints from a 3D printer, so it covers a whole model including add-on accessories.
Once the weathering steps are finished, a matte or satin product is usually taken over the gloss to unify the surface and remove the unwanted shine. A larger bottle lasts a long series of builds at normal thinning.
It can be applied with an airbrush or with a wide soft brush; the important thing is to let each coat set and not to go back into it. On large areas a slightly higher pressure helps and prevents a grainy surface at the edge of the pass.
