The death knight is an established character in heroic fantasy: an armored warrior who stayed in his armor even after death overcame him. He is rewarding precisely because of the contradiction he carries on the surface. The armor is meant to be heavy and richly decorated, but at the same time marked by time, and under it there is meant to be a sense of cold instead of a living body. The character appears in board games as well as in tabletop games, and collectors likewise build it on its own as a small sculpture.
Before painting, wash and degrease the figure, so that the finish holds. Cut the excess material left from manufacture off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so as not to damage the surrounding detail. Apply the paint in thin coats, because one thick coat floods the fine relief of the armor. The tried sequence of steps leads from a base shade through accentuating the recesses to picking out the edges, and only at the end come the highlights on the metal and the small things that are meant to catch the eye.
It suits a collector who wants one striking character for a display case, and also a player of tabletop games who wants a distinctive look for a party leader. For practicing painting it is a suitable subject: on it you work with darkening, with metal and with cloth on a small area where every stroke shows.
