Lead has a property that neither copper nor steel will offer: it is exceptionally soft and malleable. The wire can be shaped with your fingers alone, it does not spring back and it holds exactly the shape it is given – including a freely hanging loop or a sagging cable. That is precisely why it is popular everywhere a line should look relaxed and natural rather than like a taut string. A cut piece is easily shortened, bent into a curve or wound to a shape.
For modelers who add the detail of engines, landing gear and interiors and need a material that sits exactly where it is put and does not try to return to its original shape.
