About product

U-STAR leaf punch, birch leaf

This is a modeling tool, not a kit and not finished greenery. The tool works on the principle of a punch: you place thin material between the two parts, press or tap, and you get a small leaf with the right outline and with its shape suggested. Cutting hundreds of leaves a few millimeters across by hand is practically impossible, while with a punch you make them identical over and over and in the quantity a diorama scene needs.

A birch leaf is small, oval and finely toothed. It suits European and Nordic scenery, light broadleaf growth and the undergrowth along paths and railway lines.

Use

  • Making foliage for trees and bushes in dioramas and on a layout.
  • Creating a layer of fallen leaves, undergrowth and overgrown edges of paths.
  • Adding greenery to models of vehicles and equipment displayed on a base.
  • Working with thin paper, colored paper, film and thin textile sheets.

Work tips

Color the material before punching, over the whole area and ideally on both sides, because painting finished leaves is slow and the leaves curl up. Do not rely on a single shade of green: mix two or three closely related greens and add a little yellow or brown, and a finished canopy then does not look artificial. Glue the leaves with thin cement or with scenery glue in small batches. Prepare the punched leaves in a dish in advance and the work then flows.

Who the tool is for

For builders of dioramas, modelers of layouts and anyone who displays models on a scene and wants realistic greenery instead of generic foam scatter. The tool is used over and over, so it pays off even on a single larger project.

The tool has sharp edges. Use it on a firm surface, out of the reach of children, and keep your fingers away from the working part.

FAQ

No. This is a tool. You choose the paper, film or textile you will punch the leaves from yourself, according to the look you want.

The tool is not tied to a single scale. A punched leaf looks convincing in the usual diorama scales, while in very large scales it reads more like the leaf of a young shoot.

Clearly before punching. You color the material over the whole area at once, while finished small leaves are very hard to paint and tend to curl.

Most often with thin cement or with scenery glue applied in small batches, so that the leaves can be placed before the glue becomes tacky.
