1800 grit stands exactly on the boundary where leveling ends and smoothing begins. Up to this point you have been shaping; now you are only removing the traces of the previous step. This is the transition that modelers most often underrate: if you jump from a grit of around a thousand straight to the finest grades, the fine cloth will not blend the scratches away, it will only polish them, so they shine all the more under a gloss coat.
Here the abrasive backing is a flexible textile strip, not stiff paper. It bends over a finger or over a stick, wraps around a rounded shape and does not break where paper would crack and start scratching with its edge. You can work dry or with water. Water flushes away the slurry that forms, takes away heat and leaves a smoother surface, above all on clear parts. The sheets can be washed and used again, so one piece lasts far longer than disposable abrasive paper.
The most common use is on canopies and other clear parts, where a trace of the sprue gate or of the mold parting line has to be removed without leaving a milky haze. It also serves well on surfaces where filler is to be leveled, on an edge from which you have sanded flash away, and in preparing a surface before a gloss base. The package holds two sheets measuring one hundred by seventy-five millimeters, so everyone can cut them up into smaller pieces as needed. A smaller piece is moreover easier to hold between your fingers and follows the shape you press it against better.
