About product

What RLM 65 is

Light Blue RLM 65 is a light blue shade from the manufacturer Hataka from the Orange Line range, catalog code HTK-C029. The designation RLM 65 comes from the German regulation system of aviation colors and belongs to the undersurface color of aircraft from prewar times and from the first years of the war. On a model it suits places where the underside of the airframe is to be light and at the same time distinctly blue.

Where to use the shade

RLM 65 covered the undersurfaces of fighters, bombers and machines of naval aviation alike. On the upper surfaces a dark green pair belonged with it at that time, which later regulations replaced with lighter shades. In the course of the war the lighter RLM 76 came to the fore on the underside of a number of types, so RLM 65 remains the color of early machines and suits those best. The boundary between the blue of the underside and the upper surfaces runs along the sides of the fuselage and with early schemes tends to be sharp.

Application and thinning

Stir the container thoroughly before use, as settled pigment will otherwise shift the resulting shade. The thinner meant for this range and the thinning ratio are given by the manufacturer on the packaging, so keep to its instructions. Light blue shades cover worse, so lay them over a light ground and rather in several weak layers than in one dense one. Let the surface set between layers and let the finished coat cure before masking tape comes onto it. Try the shade beforehand on a piece of scrap plastic; under artificial light a light blue looks different from in daylight, and on a large area the difference shows.

Terms of supply

A model, thinner, brushes and an airbrush are not included in the supply, unless stated otherwise.

Light blue shades have a weaker covering power. A light ground and several weak layers instead of one dense one will help.

RLM 76 is a lighter undersurface shade that came to the fore later. RLM 65 belongs to the older schemes from the beginning of the war.
