Light Rust Wash is an enamel wash on a solvent base in a bottle with a volume of 35 ml from AK interactive. It is a heavily thinned paint in a light rust shade that flows into the detail, picks it out and leaves a rusty undertone behind. It suits fresh, light rust, rusty streaks running from rivets and welds, exhausts and mufflers, and the places where the paint is damaged and the metal has started to work. It is not a paint for a whole model and not a kit: it is modeling chemistry for the finishing stage.

Use

Before use, stir the bottle thoroughly: the colored component of the wash settles at the bottom, and without stirring you would apply mostly clear thinner. Keep stirring during the work as well.

• Apply it over a cured gloss varnish. The wash then flows exactly into the engraved lines and details, and the excess wipes cleanly off the smooth surface, with no stains or smears.
• Apply it with a brush, aimed into the engraved lines, around rivets, into welds and to places of chipped paint; or blend it out across an area where a light rusty veil is wanted.
• Let it act for a while so that some of the thinner leaves, and then wipe the excess away with a clean brush dampened with a suitable thinner, with enamel washes typically an odorless thinner or mineral spirits. Draw the strokes from top to bottom so that the marks follow the direction in which rainwater runs.
• Work in layers and build the strength up gradually.

The key to realistic rust: rust is never a single color. Real corrosion has light orange and ocher areas of fresh rust side by side with dark, brown to almost black deposits of old rust. A convincing result therefore comes from layering several rust tones: this light wash forms the base and the fresh areas, and darker rust shades and pigments are then added in the recesses and the lower parts.
