About product

Tamiya LP-14 IJN Gray (Maizuru Arsenal), 10 ml, a lacquer naval gray

This is a modeling paint, not a kit. LP-14 belongs to the Tamiya LP lacquer range; it is neither an acrylic nor an enamel. It is thinned only with LP-10 thinner. According to the manufacturer it is a flat shade reproducing the characteristic gray of Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) ships built at the Maizuru arsenal, which include the Shimakaze and the destroyers of the Kagero class. The bottle holds 10 ml.

Why the IJN has three different grays

The Japanese naval arsenals mixed their naval gray to their own recipes, so the shade of the hull differed according to where the ship was built. Tamiya therefore offers three shades: LP-12 Kure, LP-14 Maizuru and LP-15 Yokosuka. A modeler has to choose according to the particular ship being built, not according to how the shade looks in the bottle. For Japanese destroyers from Maizuru the right choice is LP-14.

Beware of one confusion: XF-12 J.N. Grey is a different paint, the gray of the undersurfaces of Japanese naval aircraft. It has nothing to do with naval gray.

Use

  • Hulls and superstructures of models of IJN ships built at the Maizuru arsenal.
  • Airbrush: thin with LP-10 thinner, apply in thin coats.
  • With a brush on smaller areas, armament and details of the superstructure.
  • A base for later weathering (washes, drybrushing) once fully cured.

Painting tips

LP lacquers dry quickly and form a durable film, but they are more aggressive toward plastic than acrylics. Apply them in thin coats, ideally over a cured primer, which protects the plastic and evens the base out. Never lay lacquer over uncured enamel or acrylic; the solvent would attack them. A cured LP lacquer, on the other hand, takes enamel washes well for bringing out the detail.

Who the paint is for

For builders of ship models of the Imperial Japanese Navy, destroyers above all, who want a shade matching the Maizuru arsenal.

A flammable liquid with strong fumes. Work with good ventilation or in an extraction booth, use a respirator and protect your eyes and skin. Keep out of the reach of children and away from open flame. The paint is supplied on its own; LP-10 thinner is not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a paint from the Tamiya LP lacquer range. It is thinned with LP-10 thinner, not with X-20A (acrylics) or X-20 (enamels).

They are three naval grays of the Imperial Japanese Navy according to the arsenal that mixed the paint: LP-12 Kure (for example Yamato), LP-14 Maizuru (for example Shimakaze, Kagero) and LP-15 Yokosuka (for example Shinano, Shokaku). Choose the shade according to where your ship was built.

No. LP-14 is a naval gray. For the undersurfaces of Japanese naval aircraft there is a different shade, XF-12 J.N. Grey.

Only if the lower coat is fully cured, and even then carefully and in thin coats. You must not lay lacquer over uncured acrylic or enamel; it would dissolve them. The safest way is to apply the lacquer over a cured primer.
