A monograph on the American Wildcat carrier fighter including the British Martlets Mk.I to Mk.VI, volume number 9 of the British Warpaint series, by Glen Phillips. It is a printed publication about the aircraft, not a kit and not an accessory for a build. The series is set up so that one volume covers one type from the prototype to the last version — through archive photographs, color profiles and scale drawings.
The Wildcat was the US Navy carrier fighter through the hardest phase of the war in the Pacific. It has a stocky fuselage, a mid-set wing and a narrow landing gear that retracts into the sides of the fuselage. Most versions were powered by the twin-row Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp. Against the Japanese Zero it lost out in agility, but it took a hit and in a properly flown fight in pairs it did well. British naval aviation introduced it under the name Martlet — and the Martlet Mk.I was precisely the original French order with the single-row Wright R-1820 Cyclone engine, which the Royal Navy took over after the fall of France. The later FM-2 version from licensed production went back to the single-row Wright and you can recognize it by its taller vertical tail.
Above all for modelers who are building a model of this type and are looking for reference on the colors, the markings and the details of a particular machine. Then for aviation historians and collectors of monographs, who will find the series a quick and clear reference handbook to a single type. The text is in English, so a basic command of the language is assumed.
