German patterns from Norm 83 to naval aviation

Postwar German aircraft were governed by several successive regulations and this box covers them in one package. The shades are listed mostly to the RAL scale, which the German armed forces used, and are complemented by a pair of numbers from the American FS range.

The first trio belongs to the Norm 87 pattern, that is to the last finish the Tornados of naval aviation carried: Grey Blue (RAL5008), Basalt Grey (RAL7012) and Green Grey (RAL7009). The second two named also appeared on the search and rescue helicopters Sea King Mk.41, to which Concrete Grey (RAL7023) belongs as well, used on these machines from the beginning of the nineties. A chapter of its own is Black Green (RAL6012) with the nickname BGS-Green, the uniform finish of the border guard helicopters, among which were the SA-330J Puma, the UH-1D and the Bo-105.

The last three tones make up the well-known three-color camouflage. Dark Green (FS34079), Black Grey (RAL7021) and Field Green (FS34095, also given as RAL6003) appeared in the Norm 83 pattern on the Tornado, F-104G, RF-4E, Alpha Jet and the C-160D transport, and in the Norm 84 counterpart also on the army helicopters UH-1D, Bo-105 and the heavy CH-53G.

Before you start spraying

The Norm 83 and Norm 87 patterns differ not only in their colors but also in the shape of the fields, so it pays to have a profile of the particular machine at hand. Without it it easily happens that the right shades end up in the wrong layout.
