NATO Brown is a subdued earthy brown carried under the number FS 30051 in the American federal standard FS 595. It belongs to the trio of shades that has covered the vehicles of NATO armies since the nineteen-eighties: beside the brown there are a green and a black, applied in soft irregular fields without sharp boundaries. In this scheme the brown holds the role of the darker transition between the green and the black; on its own it is calm and without a red tone. The reference to a number in the standard has a practical advantage too: by it you can compare the shade with the paints of other ranges. The first digit of the designation moreover places the shade in the flat group of the standard.
The bottle belongs to the Orange Line range from Hataka and carries the part number HTK-C188. Choose thinner and thinning ratio according to the instructions given by the manufacturer on the packaging, that is, the thinner intended for this range. Stir the contents thoroughly before work, otherwise the pigment stays settled at the bottom and the tone drifts between individual coats. Apply several thin coats with a pause; a single heavy coat floods the engraving and the edges. Wash and degrease the surface of the model beforehand. Try the shade and the behavior of the paint on a scrap piece of plastic, including the clear coat that is to go over the paint later.
It suits builders of modern military vehicles who work to a number in a standard and want the shade documented. It also serves well as a base under later grime, because a brown takes darkening by a wash and the picking out of edges by drybrushing without losing its character.
The paint is supplied on its own. Thinner, clear coat, brushes and airbrushes are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise. The volume of the package is given on the packaging.
