E.T. Model Net 0.7x0.7mm — photo-etched mesh

A fret of fine photo-etched metal mesh with a regular grid of square openings 0.7 x 0.7 mm in size. It is not a set for a particular model and not a kit, but a universal building material from which you cut the part yourself, exactly as you need it. The manufacturer is the Chinese brand E.T. Model, known for photo-etched accessories for models of military vehicles. Because it is a material and not a part for a particular subject, no scale is given for it — what decides whether it can be used is the size of the opening against what you are building.

• A replacement for thick plastic gratings, which look disproportionately heavy in scale

Tips for working and painting

Cut the mesh with sharp photo-etch scissors or with a scalpel along a steel rule on a hard surface, so that the grid is not deformed. Brief annealing over a flame will help you form it. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied around the edge, and on larger areas in spots with epoxy — take care that the glue does not run into the openings and blind them. Apply a base coat meant for metal before painting and spray in thin coats; a thick finish quickly clogs the openings. Recessed grilles come out well under a dark wash.

For modelers who want to solve small details their own way and not rely on ready-made sets — from builders of military vehicles through aircraft and ship modelers to diorama builders. Working with photo-etched sheet takes a little practice and the right tools, but a plastic part will never catch up with the result.
