This product from Artwox Model accompanies a model of the Japanese battleship Hyuga in a simplified caricature rendering. Cute little ships with a bulbous hull and oversized armament have one weakness: the large flat areas of their decks stand out on them more than on a conventional model, and that is exactly where the accessory helps. Thanks to it the build moves from a toy toward a small display case curiosity.
The real Hyuga was the second unit of the Ise class and entered service in 1918. She carried twelve main guns in turrets spread along the length of the hull. After the heavy losses of aircraft carriers at Midway she went through a rebuild in 1943 in which a short deck for catapult-launched floatplanes replaced the two after turrets. An unusual cross between a battleship and a carrier arose, which did not prove itself in action and staggered through the war as a floating battery.
We recommend painting the hull and the superstructures and letting them cure thoroughly before the set is fitted. Rid the surfaces of dust and of grease from your fingers, try the pieces dry and look for a reference edge to work from. At the end a light dark shading helps, which lets the layout of the deck stand out.
