Paint Forge Numbers Stencils L is a stencil with numerals in the larger of the available formats. It makes it possible to spray tactical numbers and markings directly in paint, without decals.

A stencil with numeric characters from Paint Forge, offered in the larger L format. It solves what decals will never quite manage: a sprayed number is part of the finish, has no carrier film under it, does not catch the light differently from its surroundings and no corner can peel off it. On a model that is meant to look worn, that is a fundamental difference.
First lay out on paper where the number will sit and mark the axis with a pencil or a thin strip of tape — a crookedly placed number spoils an otherwise perfect model. Lay the stencil on, secure it and spray perpendicular in several weak coats. With two-digit and multi-digit numbers deal with each numeral separately and cover the neighboring characters, so that overspray does not reach them. Finally it pays to knock the number back a little: a light pass of the base color over the whole spot sets it into the surface and it then looks like part of the finish, not like a sticker.
The stencil is a universal aid, not documentation on a particular army or period. The shape of numerals differs between individual armies and years, so if you are building a model from a particular photograph, check the form of the characters in your own references.
