This item is an accessory photo-etched set, not an aircraft model. It serves for working up the wing gun bays on a model of the Curtiss P-40E in the large 1:32 scale in detail. Open gun bays are among the most rewarding places on large models: the viewer sees into the wing, and the plastic molding there usually offers only coarsely suggested shapes. Thin photo-etch makes it possible to show the inner walls, the ribs and the covers in a realistic thickness.
The Curtiss P-40E was one of the most widespread versions of the P-40 range. It was powered by the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 V12 and its armament consisted of six 12.7 mm heavy machine guns housed in the wing, three in each half. The British and Allied air forces used similar machines under the designation Kittyhawk. The type saw use in North Africa, in the Pacific and in Asia, where it benefited from its tough structure and good qualities at low altitude.
Open gun bays mean cutting into the plastic: the covers have to be cut out and the edges sanded down thin. Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel, bend them in a bender and glue them with cyanoacrylate. The inside of the bays tends to be a light metal shade, so it pays to spray a primer for metal and only then the base shade over it. A gentle dark wash and discreet traces of oil around the guns will give the whole thing depth; before gluing the parts inside, think through the order of painting, because once the wing is closed up you can no longer reach the detail.
