A mailman, a pair of dog owners, four dogs and one hydrant: a small street comedy in a ratio of 1:87 for an HO layout.
Responsibility details are not available.
The package brings three human figures together with four dogs and one fire hydrant. All the scenes turn around a single theme, and yet each one tells something different.
A mailman is fending off a small dog that has gone for him. A woman leads her small four-legged companion on a leash and plainly has no trouble. A man, by contrast, is trying in vain to get his dog to walk to heel, but the puppy has plans of its own. And a fourth dog gazes dreamily at the hydrant, a punch line anybody grasps at first glance.
The hydrant in the package has a practical role too. It is an object whose real size everybody knows, so in a photograph of a layout it anchors the scale of the whole scene at once. Put it at the edge of the sidewalk and the rest of the scene around it takes on convincing proportions.
The figures are made to a ratio of 1:87. The group works best in a residential district, by row houses or at the edge of a park, that is where people really would walk their dogs. The mailman also ties the scene to a mailbox or a gate, so one figure becomes the reason why anything is happening in that spot at all.
Four-legged figures have an awkward property in HO size: they are small and easily lost. Place them on a lighter base or at the edge of the sidewalk, where they stand out against the curb, and certainly not in the shade under the crown of a tree, where they merge with the terrain. It also helps to leave a flat area with no growth under the dog, because an uneven surface reduces its already small silhouette.
