Half a millimeter of thickness against nearly five millimeters of width — that exact ratio is what makes the 0.50 x 4.8 mm profile a material for surfaces that need to be visible but not stand out. Glued side by side, strips form a planked deck; stood on edge, they serve as wooden wall cladding, and cut into short lengths they become hatch covers, seam covers, or signboards.
One piece measures 35 cm, so it is enough for the side of a hangar or a ship's hull without joining pieces together. The stated price is for one profile, not a bundle.
White polystyrene is not cut with a saw, but with a knife: the blade is run along a ruler, pressed a few times, and the material snaps off. A fine file or sandpaper then evens out the edge. The joint is held with styrene cement, which briefly softens the edges and lets them fuse together.
The surface takes both acrylic and enamel paints, though a thin primer coat is worthwhile to blend the shade with neighboring parts. A strip dipped in hot water can be bent slightly and will hold its shape once cooled, which helps with curved superstructure sides.
Diorama builders, railroad modelers, and ship modelers all reach for it. At 1:35 scale, the width corresponds to a plank roughly seventeen centimeters wide; at 1:72, it becomes quite a substantial timber.
Do not throw away the offcuts. Short leftover pieces work as wedges for aligning walls, as spacers holding a gap between a part and its base, or as glue-mixing sticks. The wide strip can also be cut into small plates, tags, and covers, for which a round material would be impractical.
