A heavy I profile 9.5 mm high and 35 cm long. The backbone material for cranes, bridge spans and large dioramas.
Responsibility details are not available.
An I profile with a 9.5 mm section is among the heaviest in its range and comes in a length of 35 cm. In 1:35 it would correspond to a girder around 33 cm tall, and in 1:72 to roughly 68 cm. These are no longer secondary girders but principal ones: the chords of bridge spans, the jibs of harbor cranes and gantries over a layout. Even at this thickness white styrene stays easy to work with a knife, a file and a drill.
In large dioramas it forms the skeleton of a whole scene - the main girder of a hall, the frame under a steel staircase, the hanger for a block and tackle or the guide track of sliding gates. Ship builders make keel blocks and dry dock supports from it, where the material has to carry the weight of the model itself. For small details it is needlessly heavy, and a thinner version from the same range will serve better; it can be combined with this profile in one assembly.
The stiffness of the profile can be put to use outside the build itself: a straight offcut serves as a rest when gluing walls at a right angle, or as a temporary brace under a bowed deck. You can strengthen the joints of a structure by letting the solvent soak into every contact and leaving the assembly undisturbed until the next day. When cutting it, bear in mind that a heavy section carries heat away less well, so a fast-running disc will melt the plastic rather than cut it. Finally, round off the sharp edges, or the paint will stay thin on them and the base will show through.
