A rectangular tube 3.2 x 6.3 millimeters in white polystyrene. A hollow section with four walls, suitable for frames and beams.
Responsibility details are not available.
A closed rectangular section is considerably stiffer than a solid profile of the same weight and at the same time lets you pass a wire or a thinner profile through the inside. That brings a double benefit: a structure built from it holds its shape even over larger spans and can be reinforced from the inside without it showing on the outside.
It is best to cut gradually, wall by wall, rather than in one stroke; otherwise the opposite walls are squeezed inwards. The cleanest result comes from a fine saw guided in a square, after which the edge is trued on abrasive paper. A burr on the inside can be left if nothing is pushed into the tube.
It is a good idea to cap the ends of a hollow profile with an offcut of sheet, otherwise the opening is visible on the finished model and looks out of place. On items that are meant to be obviously hollow, ducts for example, it pays on the contrary to emphasize the opening with a dark wash inside. One piece measures 35 centimeters.
On the frames of semi-trailers and platforms it pays to let the beams overhang and to shorten them only after the whole structure has been glued. Cutting to length in advance leads to small inaccuracies adding up, so that the last part no longer fits.
