About product

The last descendant of the Huey family

The United States Marine Corps needed to replace its aging twin-engined Hueys and chose the path of a deep rebuild. That is how the UH-1Y came about, with a four-blade composite rotor, more powerful engines and a new digital cockpit; it entered the units in 2008. Together with the AH-1Z attack helicopter it shares a large part of the airframe and of the power system, which simplified training for crews and technicians alike. The machine serves for transport, fire support and search and rescue, often from the deck of amphibious ships.

Painting over a finished print

The question that comes up most often with these sets is whether any work remains once they have been applied. It does, only of another kind. The surface stands up to a misting with a dark shade, to careful drybrushing of the edges and to targeted emphasis of the shadows in the gaps. A strong thinner or an aggressive pigment, on the other hand, can damage the print, which is why all further work is done only after the print has been sealed with varnish.

Practical limits

The relief helps where the surface is flat or only slightly curved. At sharp transitions the sheets are divided into smaller pieces and the gap between them stays apparent until you cover it with a matte varnish. It also pays to reckon with the fact that the thin layer raises the part by a fraction of a millimeter, which with a tight fit of a door may call for a little sanding underneath.

The recommended sequence of steps

First glue the tub together and let the filler cure, then spray the primer. Lay the sheets from the largest surfaces to the smallest, each one separately and with a pause for drying. Only at the end come the seats, the belts and any additional emphasis of the shadows.

FAQ

Yes, once it has been sealed with varnish. Without a protective layer a thinner may damage the print.

By a fraction of a millimeter, yes. With closely fitting parts, reckon therefore with a little sanding underneath.

Because of sharp transitions in shape. A smaller piece settles better than one large one.

For transport, fire support and rescue tasks with the Marine Corps.
