A set of three paints for British combat aircraft of the 1970s. Dark green, dark sea gray and light aircraft gray.
Responsibility details are not available.
In the 1970s British aviation kept to a divided camouflage on the upper surfaces, but the undersides were no longer covered by the deep blue of the earlier period. Light aircraft gray took over, a tone close to a fine ash color, which markedly changed the overall impression a machine made. Interceptor and strike types as well as the large four engine carriers of the nuclear weapon flew in this same finish, their enormous surfaces able to be lit in this shade so that they looked almost white. The change of the lower tone was no aesthetic whim: it was connected with the changing altitudes at which the machines operated and with where they most needed to be hidden from.
The two upper colors overlap on a model in soft or hard-edged fields according to the type and the period, and the lower gray then covers the whole remaining area. The trio therefore suffices for a whole model with no mixing and no hunting for substitutes. Anyone building several machines of this period side by side will appreciate that both upper colors are identical across the whole era and only the lower tone changes. One set therefore covers several models in progress without the shades drifting apart between them.
The paint is designed for spray application and when thinned correctly it holds sharp transitions even without a hard mask. Spraying in several light coats with a short pause between them is advisable. The base should be free of grease and evened out beforehand with a primer coat, because otherwise light gray will pick out sanding marks unevenly. Thinner, masking materials and a kit are not in the package. Once dry the surface can be coated with a gloss layer under decals as needed and finally unified with a matte or satin finish.
