Red Soldiers – a set of acrylic paints from AK interactive, the Quick Gen range

Red Soldiers is a themed set of water-thinnable acrylics from the Quick Gen range, put together around red as the main color of the figures. The shades follow one another from a dark shadow through the base tone to a light highlight, so red armor or a red uniform can be shaded without mixing in paints from elsewhere. Red is among the shades that cover a dark surface worst, so it pays to work in thin layers.

One batch, one army: why to keep the thinning constant

When you paint a group of figures over several evenings, the biggest risk is not the shade but the thinning. Paint taken straight from the bottle and paint thinned down on the palette after an hour of work will dry to a visibly different tone. With reds that difference shows the most. A simple rule helps: always thin with the same ratio, which you write down, and pour the paint into a small container in batches rather than topping the remainder up with water. Richly pigmented reds also settle quickly, so shake the bottle again before every batch, otherwise the last figures will come out paler than the first.

• Shading and highlighting of red within one set.
• Applied with a brush in thin layers, and thinned for an airbrush.
• On a dark surface use a lighter base coat, as red covers less well on its own.
