Grass tufts are the fastest way to turn a bare base into a piece of terrain. They are preshaped clumps of fibers placed one at a time, so you decide both the density and the arrangement of the growth. This variant from the Spanish brand AK interactive is red, that is a shade that suits fantasy and gaming worlds, alien planets, but also a sharp color accent in an otherwise muted scene.

How to work with a strong color

A saturated color needs a counterweight in the terrain. The best result comes when the red tufts appear in the minority among more muted growth or on bare ground, ideally repeated in several places in the scene, so that they read as part of the landscape rather than as a one-off stain. Irregular groups of unequal size look more natural than an even arrangement.

Use

• Take the tuft up with tweezers, so as not to crush the fibers and spoil its shape.
• Seat it on the terrain and press it lightly, so that the bottom part sits down over its whole area.
• If the tuft does not hold by itself, use a drop of white glue or super glue.
• Once dry, comb the fibers with your fingers or the tip of a brush, so that they open out to the sides.
• Cover the transition to the terrain with a fine scatter, so that the place where it is glued does not show.

For players of figure games who finish the bases of a whole army in one style, and for diorama builders looking for an unusual color feature. Using them is undemanding and calls for no special tools apart from tweezers.
