On the surface of the rolling pin the negative of irregularly laid flat stone slabs is engraved. The pattern is impressed into soft modeling compound, that is air-drying clay, polymer compound or two-part putty, and once set it becomes a base or a piece of terrain. The pin has a handle, so it is held like a paint roller and the pressure goes vertically down, which tells when working on a larger area: the texture comes out evenly and you do not have to put the impression together from several passes. This item is the basic, coarser version of the subject; the finer variant marked Small is a separate item.

Use

• Roll the compound out into an even layer, best of all between two guide strips of the same thickness.
• Lightly damp or dust both the pin and the compound, or the compound will cling to the relief.
• Go in one smooth pass with steady pressure, because going back smudges the impression.
• Add cracks, broken-off corners and unevenness into the fresh impression, as regular paving looks artificial.
• Once set, cut the shape out, put a base coat on, go over it with a dark wash and bring the edges out with a dry brush.

Who the rolling pin is for

For builders of dioramas, gaming terrain and for painters of figures who make their own bases. The coarser pattern suits places where the paving is meant to be clearly readable even on a larger piece and where you do not want the texture to disappear under paint and pigments.
