About product

From the Temperate Land Scheme to the Day Fighter Scheme

Until August 1941 British fighters carried on their upper surfaces the combination of Dark Earth and Dark Green known as the Temperate Land Scheme. The brown then disappeared from fighters and moved to bombers, whereas Dark Green stayed in the camouflage until the end of the war. From May 1940 the lower surfaces of Fighter Command aircraft were covered by the light Sky in the Type S shade, which also held on fighter-bombers.

From September 1941 the Day Fighter Scheme came in: above, Ocean Grey replaced the brown and the underside changed to Medium Sea Grey. The sixth tone, Interior Grey-Green, belongs to the cockpits and interior structures of British aircraft throughout the war, so one package produces a machine outside and inside alike.

Properties of the Blue Line range

Blue Line is a water-thinnable acrylic formulated for work with a brush; it stays open long enough for neighboring strokes to flow together without leaving a visible edge. Two thinner coats give a better result than one thick one, and the tools are washed afterwards with water alone.

The range of shades handles machines from the Battle of Britain as well as later day fighters, without having to buy individual bottles separately.

British camouflage had exactly prescribed shapes of field and there was a mirror-image version of it, which allows two machines to be built from the same palette that look different side by side. The boundaries on the real aircraft were crisp, so tape laid down firmly on the surface works well.

Before applying decals it is a good idea to polish the area with gloss varnish, because the matte British tones would otherwise leave a visible frame around the markings.

FAQ

Yes. The brown and green pattern with a light underside matches the period up to August 1941, and the combination of two grays the machines from September 1941 onward.

British camouflage used a single brown tone. After 1941 it left the fighters and stayed on the bombers, so one bottle covers both roles.

They can, they usually just have to be thinned a little more. The same maker aims a parallel red range at spraying.

There is. Interior Grey-Green is the standard tone of the interiors of British aircraft and it is not missing from the package.
