About product

Sepia, an AK interactive oil paint (20 ml)

Sepia is an oil paint intended for modelers, supplied in a tube with a volume of 20 ml. It is neither an acrylic nor an enamel, as the binder is oil, so it is thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits rather than with water. The shade comes from the classic artist's pigment: a dark, slightly grayed brown, historically associated with sepia ink. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Why oils in particular

The main advantage of oil is its very slow drying, in a matter of days. What is usually a drawback with covering paints is a fundamental advantage here: the paint can be blended for a long time, feathered softly, muted or on the contrary strengthened, and the transitions fine-tuned until you are satisfied. Oil is therefore not used as a covering coat for a whole model but as a tool for effects and weathering.

Use

  • Shading and deepening detail, as sepia refines the transitions without darkening an area to black.
  • Glazes and toning of larger areas to unify the coloring.
  • Aging, grime and greasy, dark traces around panel lines and rivets.
  • Wood and leather: deck planks, gun stocks, webbing, pouches; sepia gives them depth and age.
  • Dot filters and fine streaks in the direction water runs.

Practical tips

Apply it over a cured painted surface, as on a smooth finish the excess paint can be blended and drawn off cleanly, whereas on a bare flat base the oil grips and can no longer be corrected. First let a drop of the paint drain on card or a paper towel: oil releases its binder and without this step an unsightly greasy halo forms around the mark. Only then pick the paint up with a brush and apply it. Blend with a clean, slightly dampened brush, after a few minutes or even after hours, as you have the time.

Who the paint is for

For modelers who want to take a model beyond a smooth coat of paint, whether on equipment, aircraft, figures or dioramas. Sepia belongs to the basic palette of shades to start with and takes combination with other earthy tones.

Safety: the paint is thinned with solvent thinners (mineral spirits, odorless thinner), so work in a ventilated room, protect your skin and eyes and keep out of the reach of children. Thinners are flammable, so do not use them near an open flame. Thinner is not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is an oil paint, thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits. Neither water nor acrylic thinner will work.

Slowly, easily several days depending on the thickness of the layer and the temperature. That is not a fault; it is exactly why you can blend, feather and fine-tune the effect for a long time.

An oil paint releases its binder. If you apply it straight from the tube, a greasy oil halo forms around the mark. A drop drained on card or a paper towel behaves far better.

To a cured, ideally clear-coated (gloss or satin) surface. The excess can be blended and removed cleanly from it. A flat, absorbent base soaks the paint up and the effect is harder to correct.
