A finished handmade scenery tree for dioramas and model railroad layouts, not a kit. It arrives assembled and painted, and all it needs is planting into a base. A short trunk means that the branches set in low and the crown reaches almost to the ground — that is exactly how a spruce grows in the open, in a clearing, at the edge of a forest or as a solitary tree in a meadow. The size given in the name is 200 mm, which in large modeling scales corresponds to a tree around seven meters tall, and in smaller scales to roughly fourteen to seventeen meters.
The Norway spruce is the commonest conifer of Central Europe. It has a straight continuous trunk, branches in whorls, dark green needles and a narrow conical crown. The shape of the crown directly reveals where the tree grew up: in dense forest the lower branches die off for lack of light and the trunk becomes bare, while in the open a spruce keeps its branching right down. Low-branched pieces therefore belong at the edges, in clearings and in cut areas in a scene, not in the middle of a closed forest.
Drill a hole in the base, plant the trunk and secure it with cyanoacrylate or filler. Because the crown reaches low, the foot of the trunk is less visible anyway, but hide it with soil and litter all the same. In a group, combine low-branched pieces with tall-trunked ones — the boundary between meadow and forest then looks credible. Around a solitary spruce let the grass stand taller, as neither livestock nor a mower can get to it. Blend the shade of the crown with the surrounding vegetation by a fine dusting of pigment.
