Paints for Soviet aircraft in the period from the German attack to the capture of Berlin, including camouflage greens and the gray-blue tones of the later years.
Responsibility details are not available.
Between 1941 and the end of the war the Soviet Air Force went through an almost complete change of finishes. At the start the machines were covered in an overall dark green with a pale blue underside, a finish suited to an aircraft standing on grass but of little use to a fighter meant to fight at altitude. From the middle of the war, therefore, came gray and gray-blue tones broken toward a slightly bluish cast.
The set covers the Ilyushin Il-2 attack aircraft, the twin-engine Petlyakov Pe-2, the fighters of the Yakovlev and Lavochkin design bureaus and aircraft delivered under Allied aid and repainted on the spot. With the last of these it is interesting to see how the Soviet shades met the original British or American layer underneath.
The binder is acrylic and thins with water. Soviet production was marked by haste, so the finishes tended to be uneven and wore off quickly. Let the surfaces live deliberately, do not be afraid of variations in tone between panels, and at the wing root feel free to wear the paint right down to the metal. The winter white finish rubbed off so easily that the green showed through after just a few weeks.
The set does not contain paints for interiors or varnishes for decals, which are supplied separately. Likewise a decal will usually take the place of red for the stars, because a sharp outline with a white border is hard to draw with a brush. Prepare a gloss base before applying the printed markings, otherwise air will settle under the edge and the film will silver.
