An accessory for a diorama and a display case, not a kit. The designation Plain in the name distinguishes this variant from the form with a border, which is a separate item - the subject is therefore a plain star without an outline. The size of 40 mm likewise follows from the name, and the same subject also exists in a smaller 25 mm format. It is precisely the choice between the plain and the bordered form that decides how strongly the emblem will act on a base.
The five-pointed star belongs among the most widespread military symbols of the twentieth century, and on Soviet equipment it appeared from the days of the civil war right to the end of the Cold War. It was carried by armored vehicles, aircraft and artillery and survived a whole series of changes in the form of national insignia. The plain variant without a border corresponds to how the emblem looked on a number of machines of the earlier periods, whereas the bordered form tends to be associated with the later way of marking.
A star without a border is optically compact, so it takes even a smaller base and a narrow edge well. On light wood it has a strong contrast; on a dark ground finished with toning it needs a freer surrounding instead. Level and degrease the surface beforehand; with winter scenes with white effects the plaque is fitted at the very end, so that loose materials do not catch around the outline.
