A construction kit from the educational mechanical range of the Japanese company Tamiya. The robot moves neither on wheels nor by walking, but with two flexible arms driven by a motor, with which it springs energetically forward. It copes not only with a level floor, but also with small irregularities and low steps. The length of the finished model is 184 mm. It is not a scaled-down version of a real subject, but a working mechanical model on which it is visible how the flexibility of a material can be put to use as a drive.
The motor turns the arms, whose bending and springing back throws the model forward. It covers a distance of one meter in roughly four to five seconds. At the rear there are rod struts that keep the springs stable and at the same time right the model if it turns over onto its back. At the front there is a righting post with the same function, and a lower cover of the same flexible material as the arms cushions the landings and protects the gearbox. By changing the setting of the rear rods the robot can be made to turn instead of running straight.
The parts are joined by snapping together and with screws, and the motor and the switch come already fitted in the package, so the wiring is simple and no soldering is needed. Before the first run, check that the arms move freely and do not strike the frame anywhere. The model is an active one, so leave it free space in front of it and do not start it on a table it could fall off. Leave the flexible parts straightened when at rest, as long storage in a bent state does them no good. Painting is not needed, as the parts are made of colored plastic.
The set is supplied unassembled. Batteries and tools beyond those in the package are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
