About product

Starship Filth, an AK interactive oil paint, 20 ml

An oil paint from the Abteilung 502 oil line (AK interactive) in a 20 ml tube, mixed directly as starship grime. The shade is dark yet stays translucent, which is why it looks like a deposit of grime rather than a repaint: the original color and structure remain visible under it. This is a modeling paint for weathering and effects, not a kit.

Like every oil it dries very slowly, in a matter of days, which with grime is the most valuable thing of all: the deposit can be drawn away to nothing for a long time, the streaks shaped and the layers built up gradually until the result is right. It is thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits rather than with water.

Use

  • Science fiction grime and soot: deposits on spacecraft, mechs, robots and fantasy equipment, around thrusters, vents and hatches.
  • Filthy engine bays: grease, oil stains and deposits in the places where service grime collects.
  • Streaks and runs: vertical strokes below rivets, panels and openings, feathered away to nothing.
  • Glazes and filters: a thin translucent layer mutes and unifies an area that looks too clean.

The science fiction focus of the shade does not mean it suits only spacecraft. Grime is grime: the same tone works excellently on ordinary, earthbound equipment as well, on industrial machinery, ships, locomotives and in the filthy engine bays of vehicles.

A practical tip: oil in a tube releases its binder. Squeeze a drop onto card and let it drain for a while; the paint then leaves no greasy shiny edges and the grime looks flat.

It is applied over a cured painted surface, ideally a gloss or satin clear coat that takes the thinner and lets the excess be wiped off without damaging the coat beneath.

Who it is for

For modelers of science fiction and fantasy equipment, but just as much for builders of military equipment, ships, aircraft and dioramas. The slow drying gives you time to learn, as a failed application can be taken off with thinner.

Safety: it contains an oil binder and is used with solvents (odorless thinner, mineral spirits). Work in a well-ventilated area, protect your skin and eyes and keep out of the reach of children. Solvents are flammable, so do not use them near an open flame.

FAQ

No. The shade is mixed for grime on spacecraft and mechs, but it works just as well on ordinary equipment, on industrial machinery, ships, locomotives and in the filthy engine bays of vehicles.

No. The shade is dark but deliberately translucent, so that the original color and structure come through under it. It is not a covering coat but a paint for effects, glazes and deposits of grime.

It is thinned and blended with odorless thinner or mineral spirits, never with water. It dries very slowly, commonly several days, which is what lets the deposit be blended, layered and adjusted for a long time.

Oil releases excess binder, which would leave shiny greasy edges. A short drain on card takes the grease out of the paint, so the grime looks flat and natural.
