STRONG OCHER - An AK Interactive Weathering Pencil

This is not a paint in a bottle or a kit but a modeling pencil with a soft watercolor lead. It draws straight onto a finished model, and the mark can then be blended out with a damp brush, so it handles much like watercolor. The lead is water-soluble and non-toxic. The saturated ocher shade matches dry earth, dust and a finish faded by the sun.

• suggesting dust and dry earth on the lower parts of vehicles and on the running gear
• picking out edges, rivets and engraved lines with a light pass over the surface
• a finish faded on horizontal surfaces exposed to the sun
• traces of dirt running below projections, blended downwards with a brush

How to Work with the Pencil

It holds best on a flat surface, so ideally give the model a flat coat first. Draw lightly and build the color up in layers; less is usually more. Blend the mark out with a brush dampened in water and take the excess off dry. Until you fix the effect with varnish, the whole thing can be washed off with water and started again - which is why the pencils suit anyone taking up weathering as well. Seal the finished result with a matte varnish. Sharpen the lead carefully, as it is soft and breaks.

Keep out of the reach of children. Work over a mat when sharpening the lead, and do not collect the small particles anywhere food is eaten.
