The surface of still water is in fact calm only exceptionally. The wind draws bands of small waves across it that break over a shallow, rings spread by the bank after a jumping fish and the surface ripples differently above the main current than in a bay. It is precisely this irregularity that sets a convincing sheet of water apart from poured resin, which looks like glass. The preparation is intended for the surface to be played out in this way right at the end, when the rest of a scene is finished.
The compound is applied in a clear state and it dries clear as well. The color of the sheet of water under it therefore stays as you prepared it and only the shape of the surface changes. It is spread with a spreader, a spatula or an old brush, and depending on how hard you draw the material, either fine wrinkles left by a breeze or more pronounced waves driven by a strong wind arise.
The shade can be adjusted by mixing in water tinting colors. For the crests of waves and the white foam that forms behind a boat or below a weir, a separate preparation for white water serves, which is applied onto the shaped surface. Try the procedure out on an offcut first, because a relief that has dried once is only unified with difficulty.
