A stylized figure set from the TOONS range combining the themes of a Spartan warrior and an elephant. A plastic model in cartoon-like, deliberately foreshortened shapes.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set belongs to the range marked TOONS, a group of models that deliberately do not reduce their subject faithfully but redraw it into a humorous form: a big head, a short body, bold outline shapes. The name brings together two themes that read easily, Spartan warfare and an elephant. Ancient arms and armor suit such a treatment, because they rest on a few strong shapes that work even after simplification: a crested helmet, a round shield and a spear.
It is a plastic model supplied as a kit to be assembled. The extent of the package, the number of parts and the way the individual pieces go together are given in the manufacturer's instructions and illustration. The finished piece is meant for a shelf rather than for a display case of faithful scale reductions; next to the stylized machines and figures from the same group it holds a consistent look.
Separate the parts with nippers a little way from the part and level the remainder with a sharp blade; on large smooth areas every unworked stub shows. Wash and degrease the surface before painting. Cartoon-like shapes suit saturated, clean color and only a mild emphasis on folds and hollows; exaggerated shading and chipping look out of place on a simplified form.
It suits collectors of stylized figures, a quick build between two demanding projects, or a gift for somebody who does not build models at all. Paints, glue and tools are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
