The undergrowth of a forest clearing

Under the crowns of trees the grass always has a different tone than in an open meadow: darker, cooler, with a bluish cast. A dark green area measuring 83.8 x 127 cm is therefore a rewarding base for a forest clearing, the edge of a deep wood, an avenue along a road or a castle park with grown oaks.

The mat stands on a vinyl backing, the flock does not come off it and the shade lasts even under the sharp light of exhibition lamps. It will find a use everywhere a grassy area is to be seen only in part and the rest is covered by trees: a dark base emphasizes their shadow and a scene does not lose depth even when seen from above.

Combining it with trees

The best result comes from working from the back. First the trunks are placed and only then is it decided where the footpath will run. In the place of the path the flock is scraped off, fine sand is rubbed into the groove that arises and the edges are feathered with a brush. Around the foot of every trunk a pinch of dark scatter and a few dry leaves help, so that the transition does not look glued on.

In a clearing it pays off to think about where the light falls from. A single band brightened with pigment across the area turns level green into a clearing into which the sun comes through a gap between the crowns.

The area can be glued down permanently or merely laid down loose. The second option suits those who change a scene according to the model being shown, because a mat can be rolled up and used differently next time. A dark shade moreover takes later shading with pigments well, so both a spring and a fall mood can be created from one area.
