The pale blue tone Royal Navy WWII W.A. Blue from Lifecolor is one of the two color components of the Western Approaches scheme, with which the Royal Navy painted the escort ships of convoys in the North Atlantic.

The shade Royal Navy WWII W.A. Blue is an acrylic modeling paint from the naval part of the Lifecolor range. The abbreviation W.A. in the name stands for Western Approaches, that is, the western approach routes to the British Isles and at the same time the command that kept watch over them. This group includes the pale tones with which corvettes, frigates and other convoy escort ships were painted during the Second World War.
At first glance it is a contradiction: a ship is meant to be lost from view, and yet it gets an almost pastel blue. The weather of the North Atlantic provides the explanation. Low cloud, fog and diffuse light hold over it, so the horizon is light gray to whitish most of the time. A dark Admiralty gray stood out against it as a sharp silhouette that an observer from a submarine found at a great distance. A pale blue, on the other hand, has a brightness close to that of the water and the sky on a misty day, so the outline of the hull merges before anyone has time to take a bearing on it. It is not about invisibility, but about time gained.
The blue does not make the scheme on its own. It is applied over a light base as irregular rounded areas and is complemented by a cool green from the same group. The transitions between fields tend to be soft rather than sharply bounded, and the blue areas concentrate where the hull is meant to be visually shortened, that is, toward the bow, under the bridge and on the superstructures. On a model it proves worthwhile to build the tone up in several thin passes and to raise the brightness gradually, until the area looks even.
