Universal Abrasive Block 30

What the block is for

This is an abrasive rubber block measuring 80 x 50 x 20 mm in 30 grit. That is a genuinely coarse grade, which takes material off quickly and in quantity. It suits work where a large area has to be leveled, a part shortened or reshaped, and surplus material and traces of production removed. The rubber body is flexible, so the block can be pressed even onto a slightly convex area, and at the same time it holds its shape, so a flat area stays flat. The dimensions sit in the palm of the hand, and three faces of different size let you work in less accessible places too.

How to work with it

• Sand in one direction with a drawing stroke and check your work often; a coarse grade takes off more quickly than you expect.
• Go carefully on thin walls and small parts, where there is a risk of rubbing through.
• After the rough work, move on to finer grades, otherwise deep scratches will stay in the surface.
• Tap the block out from time to time; a clogged surface stops cutting and starts to smear.
• On longer jobs protect your airways, as the abrasive dust stays in the air.

Who it is for

For the modeler who needs to rough out rather than finish: to level a large area, to adjust the shape of a part or to prepare the ground for further, finer grades. On its own it is not enough to smooth a surface before painting, because 30 grit leaves a noticeable texture behind. In a set of tools it is a good companion to finer sanding sponges and abrasive papers.
