US Army Helo Drab is a dark, matte green with a grayish cast. In the Federal Standard 595 chart it carries the number 34031: the leading 3 marks the matte group, and the 4 in the second position marks the green family. The name references the single-color finish of US Army helicopters, where the paint was meant to suppress the aircraft against the terrain, not decorate it.
A single dark finish is deceptive on a model: a large area of one dark tone absorbs light and the shape underneath disappears. It is therefore worth breaking up the shade — for example, by lightening the middle of panels and adding a subtle wash into the seams. On a helicopter, it pays to set apart the stub wings and the areas around intakes, where grime collects the most. Worn spots by doors and on step areas need only a restrained touch, since dark green is sensitive to contrast.
