The first part of the collection for the American aggressor squadrons: eight earthy acrylics of 17 ml each, from desert sand through forest green to dark gray.
Responsibility details are not available.
In air combat training a pilot needs an opponent who behaves differently from his own squadron. The US Air Force therefore set aside units whose task was to imitate the tactics and the appearance of foreign hardware. The machines received finishes copied from photographs of foreign aircraft, and because the originals differed according to the area of deployment, a whole range of patterns arose. This first part of the collection gathers the earthy ones.
The package holds USAF Tan, Camouflage Pale Brown, US Forest Green, US Desert Sand, USAF Green, Aggressor Gray, USAF Medium Gray and Black. The first four cover the sandy and brown areas typical of dry regions, the greens belong to the broken patterns over vegetation, and the grays are used on the lower parts of the fuselage and wings.
The Aggressor Gray shade is of interest because it is not available in a bottle of its own, so this set is the way to get hold of it. The other tones can also be bought individually.
The paints are acrylic, they are thinned with water and they are mixed to an airbrush consistency. They have to be stirred thoroughly before application, otherwise the shade will come out lighter than it should. Crisp transitions between the fields of the camouflage are made either with a stencil of modeling putty or with adhesive tape lifted above the surface, so that the edge stays soft. Dry regions moreover deposit dust on a machine quickly, so once dry the surfaces benefit from being gone over lightly with a light pigment.
