About product

A green-gray pattern over European forests

At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s the US Air Force reconsidered the way it would fight over Europe. Flight at low altitude below the radar horizon was reckoned with, and the new finish matched that. It replaced the previous Southeast Asia pattern and above all abandoned the habit of painting the underside of a machine light: the new pattern was drawn across the whole airframe including the belly, so that an aircraft would blend with the terrain seen from above as well as when banking in a turn.

The pattern consisted of two greens and one dark gray in irregular fields with soft edges. It was worn by attack and fighter machines, by tactical transport aircraft and by helicopters that were to operate under cloud over Europe. It began to give way only at the start of the 1990s, when the fighting moved to medium altitudes and the whole aircraft moved with it into shades of gray.

For a modeler what is interesting about that pattern is above all how demanding it is on area. The fields are large, they run across the wing as well as the fuselage and they have to follow on from one another even where the airframe breaks into a curve. Anyone who draws the pattern out on a paper outline beforehand will save a great deal of repainting on the model.

Six shades and a range for the nozzle

The package carries a dark green, a medium green, the gray used on attack machines, a European green, a European gray and a muted green. The make-up therefore covers the pattern itself as well as the supplementary areas that differed from it.

Blue Line is an acrylic range prepared for spraying with an airbrush. With it, it pays to spray in light coats and to let the pattern grow gradually; the soft edge between fields can then be led freehand without a mask. If a transition is to be completely sharp, a strip of modeling putty lifted a few millimeters above the surface will serve.
