Six lacquer paints for American aircraft of the Vietnam era: four tones of the Southeast Asia camouflage, black undersides and the gray of air defense.
Responsibility details are not available.
The finish called the Southeast Asia scheme after the theater it was worn in is among the best known liveries of the Cold War. On the upper surfaces it combined Dark Tan, Dark Green and Medium Green, that is three earth tones divided by soft edges, and on the underside a light Camouflage Grey. Machines of the tactical air forces flew in this form, from fighter-bombers to light reconnaissance types.
Night Black aims at the aircraft that were given black lower surfaces: these were the F-111 types and also all the machines of the strategic air forces in the same scheme. The sixth shade, Air Defence Grey, stands apart from camouflage and matches the overall finish of the American interceptors of the home air defense and of the National Guard machines, among them the F-101, the F-106 and the Phantoms. One set therefore covers a machine on combat duty as well as a patrol aircraft from a base in the United States.
The paints with a code beginning HTK-CS make up the Red Line lacquer range. They thin only with lacquer thinner and are worked with in a well-ventilated space, ideally in a spray booth with extraction. The reward is an exceptionally smooth and hard film that holds on plastic and on photo-etched parts, dries quickly and, when masking the edges of tape, does not tear the layer beneath away. That is exactly why it suits multi-color schemes where the tape is laid down again and again. This range is supplied in a six-color package, the same scope as the acrylic set.
