Violet Wash - a wash from the Wargame range by AK interactive

A liquid wash in a violet tone intended to accentuate detail. It is not an opaque paint: it is applied thinly, it flows by capillary action into engraved lines and recesses and once dry it stays mainly where the shadow belongs. On raised surfaces it leaves only a faint hint. The Wargame range aims at players who need to shade a larger number of figures quickly and repeatably, but it serves well on a scale model too.

When to reach for the violet shade

A violet wash is a specialist, not an all-rounder. It deepens the shadows on cool colors, where a brown wash would look dirty, and it suits blue, purple and black surfaces, the folds of a cloak, the skin of fantastical creatures and the shading of silvery metals, to which it gives a cooler undertone. Over warm ocher and sandy shades, on the other hand, it creates a grayish veil that has to be reckoned with.

Use

• Shake the bottle thoroughly before use, the pigment settles at the bottom.
• Apply it to a smooth and dried base; on a roughened matte surface the wash bleeds into a wide stain.
• Work in small areas and soak the excess up right away with a dry brush or the corner of a paper towel.
• Two thin layers are better than one heavy one, the darkening can be dosed.
• Before you apply it, try the wash on a spare part or on the underside of the base.
• For thinning and cleaning, follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label; the type of thinner differs between the individual wash ranges and a mix-up only shows up on the model.
