About product

From green-brown camouflage to bare duralumin

The set brings together five shades with which a US Army Air Forces machine can be painted at any stage of the war. Two tones are aimed at the camouflaged period, three metallics at what came after it.

A pair of olive tones

Until the beginning of 1944 aircraft left the production lines in a green-brown finish with light undersides. The tone Dark Olive Drab 41 matches the older American standard, whereas ANA 613 Olive Drab came in during 1943 as an inter-Allied unified specification and is noticeably warmer. In period photographs the difference shows mainly on surfaces that were long in the sun.

Three shades of aluminum

In the spring of 1944 factory camouflage faded away. Air superiority over Europe was such that the weight saved and the painting hours dropped counted for more than concealment, and new Mustangs and Flying Fortresses arrived at their squadrons unpainted. The tones Aluminium, Dark Aluminium and Matte Aluminium from the Xtreme Metal range are meant for exactly that: they differ in brightness enough to let the individual skin panels be played off against each other, so the surface does not read as one continuous silver area.

How to work with them

The metallic tones belong in an airbrush and want a smooth, glossy base; the care taken over the preparation decides the final sheen more than the paint itself. The olive pair can also be applied with a brush and takes drybrushing of edges and rivets well.

What to watch out for

The change from the camouflaged to the unpainted form happened gradually, so in the spring of 1944 machines of both kinds could stand side by side in one squadron. Before choosing a shade it therefore pays to find a photograph of the particular machine and not to go by the date alone; the difference between a factory finish and a repainted patch is usually clearly visible in photographs.

FAQ

Five. Two green-brown camouflage tones and three aluminums from the Xtreme Metal range.

American aircraft wore a green-brown finish until the spring of 1944; after that camouflage was dropped at the factory and the machines flew in bare metal.

They are made for an airbrush and a smooth, glossy base; only the olive pair can be worked reliably with a brush.

The older 41 is darker and cooler, the later 613 warmer; both standards were in force alongside each other and they can be combined.
