About product

Tamiya XF-28 Dark Copper (Enamel), 10 ml

A modeling paint, not a kit. It is a synthetic enamel (solvent-based) Tamiya paint from the XF range, that is, matte — the letters XF in Tamiya's naming denote a matte finish. The bottle contains 10 ml. The Dark Copper shade is a dark copper with a metallic character: the manufacturer recommends it for rendering metal parts, such as engine crankcases.

Watch out for mix-ups: Tamiya releases the same shade numbers (including XF-28) in its acrylic range too. This paint is enamel — thinned with thinner X-20 (without the letter A). The acrylic version is thinned with X-20A. The thinners are not interchangeable; the wrong thinner will ruin the paint.

Use

  • Copper piping, fittings and plumbing, weathered and aged metal, exhausts and engine parts.
  • Historical ships and their metal fittings, and metallic accents on vehicles and figures.
  • Metallics — mixing is mandatory: metallic pigment settles to the bottom of the bottle, so mix the paint thoroughly before every use, or you will apply only binder with no pigment.
  • Apply over a smooth base — metallic shades mercilessly highlight scratches and rough surfaces, so sanding beforehand and a smooth base pay off.
  • Save metallics for the final step — they are harder to overcoat, and later layers can easily spoil them.
  • With an airbrush or a brush. For spraying, the manufacturer recommends adding 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint.
  • A gloss varnish layer is required under decals — a matte surface would create a white haze (silvering) under a decal. Choose a varnish compatible with enamel; aggressive lacquer varnishes are not recommended over enamel.

Who it is for

For modelers of vehicles, ships and figures who need a reliable dark copper metallic shade with the coverage and durability typical of enamels. Suitable for airbrush, brush, and dry-brushing details.

Safety: flammable. Irritates the airways — use only in well-ventilated areas, and use respiratory protection when spraying. Keep out of the reach of children. Keep away from open flames and ignition sources.

FAQ

It is an enamel (synthetic, solvent-based) paint. It is thinned with Tamiya's enamel thinner X-20 — note, not X-20A, which is the thinner for the acrylic range. The same shade number XF-28 also exists in Tamiya's acrylic version, so check when buying that you have the right range.

The XF designation from Tamiya means a matte shade, so the finish is matte. If you need gloss, coat the model with a gloss varnish — this is also needed before applying decals, so a white haze does not form under them.

With metallic shades, the metal pigment settles to the bottom of the bottle. The paint must be mixed very thoroughly before every use. Metallics also need a smooth base — they look uneven on a rough or sanded surface — and are harder to overcoat, so apply them at the end of the painting process.

Yes, both. For spraying, the manufacturer recommends thinning the paint roughly 2 parts thinner X-20 to 10 parts paint. For brush painting and dry-brushing small metal details, the paint can also be used unthinned.
