DSPIAE XPB-05 Dawning, tungsten steel scriber 0.5 mm

A tungsten steel scriber from the Dawning range, in the version 0.5 mm wide. This is a modeling tool, neither a kit nor a part for a model. The width of the blade answers to the width of the groove it makes, and is therefore the main figure by which a scriber is chosen; the manufacturer makes the same range in other widths as well.

What a width of 0.5 mm means

Half a millimeter is already a distinct groove. It does not suit the fine panel lines of an aircraft in a small scale, where it would look coarse, but it is exactly what you need wherever a gap is meant to be seen: the outline of a hatch, the dividing gap between panels, the perimeter of a small door or a cover. Lines of this width keep their contrast after a wash even under several coats of paint and varnish, which often flood a narrower groove.

How the scriber is used

Tungsten steel is hard and holds its edge, but it is at the same time brittle, so it will not stand being levered sideways. You work with light repeated draws guided along a template or stuck-down tape; depth is added gradually, not by pressure. The first draws only mark the track, and only the later ones deepen it. The material pushed up along the sides of the groove is smoothed away at the end with a fine abrasive.

Use

• scribing distinct gaps around hatches, small doors and covers
• restoring lines sanded away after filling and sanding
• deepening shallow lines that would be lost under paint
• marking the division of panels on a smooth surface along a template

Who the scriber is for

For modelers who want their scribing graded by width and do not care to rely on a single general-purpose tip. A width of 0.5 mm suits larger scales rather than small ones, and places where a gap is meant to be pronounced.

The blade is sharp and brittle. Guide it away from the body, do not lever it sideways and store the scriber out of the reach of children. Wipe away the dust raised by scribing before painting, or it will show under the paint.
