About product

Tamiya Zimmerit Coating Applicator

A set of photo-etched tools from the Japanese maker Tamiya with which you create the characteristic texture of Zimmerit in applied modeling putty. The package contains several toothed blades in various widths for wider and narrower areas. The tool is intended above all for builders of German tanks of the Second World War.

Use

  • A layer of modeling putty is applied to the part (ideally Tamiya polyester putty)
  • The toothed blade presses a regular ridged pattern into the soft putty
  • The various blade widths cover the large areas of the hull as well as tight spots
  • Once the putty has dried, the surface is sanded, primed and painted

Who it is for

For modelers building German armored vehicles who want to imitate the Zimmerit anti-magnetic coating faithfully. Better suited to the more experienced, who have already worked with putty.

Zimmerit was a paste-like material that the Germans applied to tanks against magnetic mines. The blades are sharp — work carefully and out of the reach of children.

FAQ

A paste-like coating that German soldiers applied to the surface of tanks in the Second World War as protection against magnetic anti-tank mines sticking to them. It had a typical ridged texture.

Yes. The tool does not create the texture out of nothing — the pattern is pressed into a layer of applied modeling putty. Polyester putty is ideal. Putty is not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Working with putty and texturing it calls for a little experience and a steady hand, so this tool is better suited to more experienced modelers.
