It is supplied unassembled and unpainted and is meant to be glued, painted and displayed. According to the name of the item, the subject is the crew of a 20 mm shipboard cannon on an American aircraft carrier at the time of the Battle of Midway in 1942.
The 20 mm Oerlikon cannon was a light antiaircraft automatic weapon of Swiss design which the US Navy introduced in large numbers on the decks of ships of all classes during the Second World War. It was a short-range weapon, worked by hand: the gunner aimed the whole weapon, braced himself against a shoulder rest and was secured by a harness while firing. The gear of the crew matched work on an open deck, that is, a helmet, goggles and a life vest. The Battle of Midway took place in June 1942 and was a carrier-borne air and naval operation.
Busts of this kind are cast in resin. Before building, therefore, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water to free them of mold release residue, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or with cutting pliers and sand the surface down; protect your airways when sanding resin. It is glued with super glue, and larger joints take epoxy as well. The base is formed by a base coat from a spray can or an airbrush. Skin is best built up in thin layers, traditionally with oil paints because of their long drying time and the ease of blending, or with acrylics. Fabric comes out well with a dry brush and a fine dark wash in the folds.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
